Labelling and Tracing
The Beef Labelling Scheme
The beef labelling system is a European Community (EC) wide system that is designed to provide consumers with clear and reliable information about the beef that they buy. At the centre of this scheme is the requirement that all beef which is on sale should be able to be traced back to its place of origin.
By law, labels must already contain information about where your beef was slaughtered and where the cutting operations were performed.
From 2002, information on the countries of birth and rearing from within the EU, and whether the beef has been imported into the EU must also be detailed on the label.
All other labelling claims concerning the origin, type and method of production of beef offered for sale have to be traceable and approved.
Examples of labels containing compulsory information (red), and other information which requires independent verification (green).
