Market Update 26/03/08
Wednesday 26th March 2008 Quotes for prime cattle increased by 2p at the plants. Some were at 250-252p for U3 grade steers and heifers, while others were quoting 248-250p U3. All the factories indicated that supplies were much slower than a fortnight ago, which was the reason for the increase in price. Cows were unchanged at most plants but they increased 4p at one, with the best heavy cows at 206-210p.
Hoggets 320-330p
Quotes for hoggets increased by 20-30p depending on the plant to 320-330p. Quotes are currently 60-70p/kg higher than this time last year. Tighter supplies and rising prices in GB and at the local marts was behind the rise in price. Spring lambs were unchanged at 400p.
Latest mart prices (p/kg):
· Martinstown (Tues evening): hoggets 258-301p, lambs 380p
· Ballymena: hoggets 300p
